Minding my Q’s
Immersing myself all day on type making today. I’m working on that new typeface for The League.
It’s coming along quite nicely, and faster than I thought it would. But for most of today and yesterday, I’ve been stuck, unexpectedly on the letter Q.
You’d think Q would be pretty simple, right? Copy the “O” and give it a tail. Well, the tail is really the pickle here. I just didn’t know what sort of tail it should have. Should it reach below the baseline, or should it be aligned to the baseline?. Should it slice through the bowl of the O, or not? How angled should the tail be?
All in all, I spent a ton of time trying out all the different possibilities that the Q could go, but I think I finally have decided on one, the very last one on that list. You can see the evolution I went through to get there.
To be honest, I think some of the non-slicing tails in the beginning of the list kinda looks good, as a stand alone Q, but I don’t think they’d work well as part of a unit. I’d like to keep all the capitals to be aligned and above the baseline, so having a Q tail that reaches below, would break that consistency.
So that’s where I’m at right now. Stay tuned for more updates, ramblings, queries, complaints, and/or suicidal thoughts on this subject!

Catchwords

Yesss! I need to design more things with catchwords. Too bad that picture is not from an actual font… but there’s a list of fonts (not corresponding to the image) that have catchwords in it. The first one, Brothers is my favorite.

ignaciogiri:

Catchwords are preset typographic alternates like “the”, “and”, etc. Here are some good examples with good fonts with this kind of alternates:

Micah suggested I make some sort of custom ligature for my logotype. Good idea!
The font is Darjeeling. I added the curl on the C, also the R and K swashes. Cause I love swashes.

Lettering Contest!

Romina told me about this Design Your Own Alphabet Contest from Design Sponge a week ago, and I told her that I was gonna give it a shot. I had a whole week to work on it, so of course I didn’t start until the night before it was due. But it came out pretty decent, especially after I start using the letters for the type spec poster.

I’ve been doing a lot of stippling for some reason lately, maybe it’s just a good way to get out aggression, I don’t know. But That’s what my idea of the alphabet is: stippled script letters. It’s called Salt & Pepper.

This isn’t the screenshot that I sent to the contest, cause I ran out of time last night. I just made this type spec this morning for fun. Oh, well, I’m not too gung-ho about winning the money prize anyways.

Here are some detailed screenshots of all the stippling!
