Bambi Premiere at the Radio City Music Hall for the 1942 Exhibition
When I got the assignment for the 1942 exhibition, I knew that I wanted to take on the home front, focusing specifically on entertainment in 1942. I’m a fan of old movies, and I thought it’d be fun to do a piece about that.
“The children at the Music Hall yesterday were content again; from all over the darkened house childish laughter broke forth continuously and once or twice childish tears and boohoos. For “Bambi” has come to town and with it the Music Hall has again become a children’s fairyland.”
- The New York Times, August 14, 1942.
In the midst of World War II, many great films were still being released into the theaters. On August 13, 1942, Bambi had its US premiere at the Radio City Music Hall. It didn’t do so well in the box office, but, no matter, because for the children (and their adults) who watched it, there was nothing better than a little Walt Disney magic to escape to.
